Islanders offered the opportunity to reclaim their shirt or t-shirt from art installation

ArtHouse Jersey is offering Islanders the opportunity to come along and reclaim their donated shirt from the Dancing Together/ Dancing Together: A Ballad art installation. The artwork, which appeared at Charing Cross with a subsequent indoor iteration at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House, features over 700 shirts donated by people in Jersey during the summer, with many of those sharing a meaningful memory or story connected to their shirt. It was created by Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen.

We’re inviting those who would like to retrieve their sentimental shirts to notify the team by Monday 2 December at 5pm. They will need to email shirts@arts.je with a clear description or photograph of their shirt which will be identified and tagged before the artwork is de-installed. People are also welcome to pop into the gallery and to identify their garment. Shirts will then be ready for collection on Wednesday 4 December from 10am to 6pm.

The shirts were collected at donation points in July and strung together at the gallery before being hung across St Helier’s Charing Cross. The garments spent over ten weeks out in the elements before coming back to the gallery to appear in an indoor iteration of the artwork. With this in mind, Islanders are asked to be aware that their shirt/s may have suffered some weather damage during the live installation period, and/or may have been altered slightly in the process of making the artwork.

Following collection day on Wednesday 4 December the remaining shirts will be donated to Jersey Hospice, who will forward them on for textile recycling and receive the proceeds for the exchange for their charity.

The currently running Dancing Together: A Ballad exhibition which has been re-designed to be enjoyed within a gallery space setting will run through until Sunday 1 December at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House from 10.30am to 6pm each day.

Dancing Together and Dancing Together: A Ballad are the inaugural artworks in the Butterfield Public Art Series sponsored by Butterfield and produced by ArtHouse Jersey.
